Restylane and Juvederm are a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance found throughout the body. This water-gelling molecule is responsible for adding volume to the skin (not the thighs or tummy!), lubricating joints and giving eyes their shape. It further acts as a spongy shock absorber for nerves located in the connective tissue throughout the body. Like BOTOX® Cosmetic and collagen, Restylane or Juvederm is injected into the skin. But here most similarities end. There is not a required skin test for Restylane because it contains no animal products, thus patients sensitive or allergic to eggs, beef or chicken are not affected, as they might be if collagen were used. Restylane is biodegradable, which means that when the injected gel breaks down, it turns into water and carbon dioxide and disappears unnoticed from the body. Best of all, Restylane lasts up to one year! When Restylane is placed in an area where improvement is sought such as filling deep lines, it creates or adds volume, works as filler and lifts up wrinkles while smoothing them out. When Restylane is used for enhancing lips, it adds volume and shape to the treated area. In fact lipstick "bleeding" can often be corrected by redefining the lip line with Restylane. What is Radiesse? Radiesse is a semi-permanent (2-3 years) filler used for those unwanted facial defects such as “smile lines” (also called nasalabial folds) and other facial areas that need augmenting. Dr. Waldman is very excited about the duration of this material. What can I expect during the procedure? First we apply a topical numbing medication. We also do a dental nerve block of the lips are being treated. After waiting several minutes the treatment is done in a very careful and artistic manner. What results can I expect from filler injections? These hyaluronic acids can smooth out, fill in and decrease wrinkles, plump and define the edges of the lips, can fill in and reduce the depth of the nasolabial fold, and can fill depressed acnes scars. How long is the recovery period? There may be some mild swelling after the procedure; however, using ice will help decrease the swelling. Most patients look normal with make-up within one hour. Occasionally, mild bruising may be seen or small dots may appear at the locations where the needles were inserted. This is more common when using Radiesse. Related Procedures:
