Every season has its own effect on your skin…
With the holidays finally finished, we are faced with the next couple months of winter. Despite the heavy focus on weight loss and resolution as the new year begins, what you might not be considering is the health of your skin. The abundance of guilty-pleasure foods over the holidays can contribute to skin breakouts and other problems. Pair this with the cold, dry weather and you’ve got a combination for skin that is need of some serious TLC.
Here are some ways to fight the winter blues and keep your skin radiating with a healthy glow.
MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE. Lower humidity, higher wind, and colder temperatures all have a drying effect on the skin. The number one thing you can do is keep your skin hydrated by regularly applying a topical moisturizer. Also try switching to a very gentle cleanser to protect the moisture your skin already has.
HYDRATE. Wrinkles are a product of dehydration. When we’re cold it’s harder to remember to stay hydrated than in those blistering summer months. Drinking lots of water is crucial to hydrating cells internally, allowing them to keep their fullness. Hot tea is a good choice during winter to keep you toasty as well as glowing.
HUMIDIFY. The air is driest during the winter months, as humidity drops far below its summer levels. A cool mist humidifier can help combat environmental dryness in your home or workplace, returning the dewy shine to your complexion.
PROTECT. Even though the weather is cold and we spend more time indoors, you shouldn’t neglect the sunscreen during winter. The sun is still as bright even if you can’t feel its rays. Applying a sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF and UVA/UVB protection in the mornings underneath your makeup should be a daily routine no matter the season. This will keep you damage-free everywhere you go.
NOURISH. Your skin can be a direct reflection of what you put into your body, believe it or not! Make sure to eat healthy, nourishing foods with lots of nutrients in them. Concentrate on the bright colored fruits and vegetables. Blueberries, carrots, and sweet potatoes are all good choices. It’s easy to let our diet slip away from us during this time of year, but eat healthfully and your skin (and your whole body, for that matter!) will thank you.
